Eliot’s Digital Camera and Photoshop classes are well known throughout the Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia areas.

Classes are offered through several organizations as well as on an individual basis. Here are some locations where you can learn from Eliot:

Smithsonian Associates  Penn Camera   Photoworks at Glen Echo Park  ACE Photo

Lightroom

Lightroom is a new Adobe application for organizing and managing the large numbers of files that digital photographers accumulate. It is far more elegant and capable than Adobe Bridge in performing these tasks. Lightroom also allows one to edit their files globally for tone, color, and sharpness; create slide shows, print, and publish web galleries within separate modules. In short, it's a wonderful administrative hub for all one's files.

Eliot is teaching Lightroom classes monthly during the day in McLean, and in the evenings with Photoworks and ACE Photo. The classes are comprehensive and will have everyone up and running with Lightroom right away. They are typically done on one's own laptop, building one's own catalog, although this is not a requirement for the courses.

For additional information and schedules, email Eliot.

Bookmaking with Blurb - 2 days in McLean Sat 7/24 and 7/31; 9:30-4:PM

Sold out! Please contact Eliot to be added to the wait list.

Course cost: $395

Books are a wonderful way to share images and present portfolios. They can be formal and artistic or informal and family or travel oriented. With on demand publishing through organizations such as Blurb, one can print a single copy or a small number and not be constrained by typical publishing models with large print runs. It makes the process affordable and fun. Blurb www.Blurb.com is one of the foremost on demand publishers. Their software is free, flexible, and the books are nicely printed. For those interested in making books with Blurb, I will teach a workshop that will go through the process from start to finish, culminating in a book that you can upload and print.

In the class I will take you through the mechanics of using the Blurb software, starting with their templates and moving towards customizing your own. We will talk about how best to prepare your files for publication (tone, color, sharpening), and provide information about how to color manage your files for predictable results from screen to print. We will also work on sequencing your photographs and the layout of your books in order to make them as interesting as possible. We will work with text and pictures, so the books can be a combination of narrative ideas as well as pictures.

Each participant will be working on a book during the 2 sessions. The idea is to give you all the info you need to complete the preparation of the book and be able to upload it to Blurb soon after we finish. There will be both group and individual discussion during the sessions.

You are welcome to look at my books on Torres del Paine in Chile, and Galapagos, on the Blurb site as examples.

The Photoshop classes are held either on Mon and Weds evenings from 6:30 – 9:30 PM (5 sessions), or on consecutive Friday evenings with full days on Saturday or Sunday (2 weekends). These classes are very comprehensive and cover all the basics of Photoshop including layers, selections, masks, retouching, and color correction. No prior familiarity with Photoshop is needed. People with some experience will still find this class beneficial as it puts all the features into context and provides a systematic way of approaching one’s work. The class is suitable for people working either with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Photoshop for Photographers includes more sophisticated methods of editing images and is a wonderful class for understanding the full possibilities of the digital darkroom. This class also goes through the workflow for editing RAW files. It is an advanced class and should not be taken before completing Photoshop I. You are welcome to contact me if you feel that your prior experience with Photoshop would allow you to feel comfortable in this class.

Digital Camera Basics is a one day class, held on a Saturday or Sunday, and covers each aspect in great detail.  It is an introductory class and no prior knowledge is needed. The discussion includes all the important features of digital cameras whether they are point and shoot or DSLR’s.

For those who have completed Digital Camera Basics, or those who are already quite familiar with their cameras, Getting to Know Your Digital SLR would also be helpful.  This class is done in the field as a shooting class.

Other classes include RAW editing, advanced procedures in workflow and editing, and bookmaking with Blurb.  You may contact me for additional information.

The Smithsonian classes are held at the Museum of Natural History. Parking is available in the staff lot and there is convenient Metro access.

The Digital Camera and Editing class is offered on Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 – 4:30. It combines the introduction to the camera with an introduction to Photoshop. The class begins with use of the camera and moves at a gradual pace through the organization of files on the computer, sizing, cropping, sharpening, and color correction. The class is taught hands on in the new computer classroom at Photoworks. Upon completion participants should have a good working knowledge of their camera as well as a set of step by step procedures to set up and edit their files. The class is suitable for people who want to work with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
